Punch cards, known as Hollerith cards and
IBM cards and originally invented by Herman Hollerith, are paper cards
containing several punch holes that were punched by hand or machine to
represent data that allowed different companies to store and access information
by entering the card into the computer. It was the primary method of storing
and retrieving data in the early 1990s.
